Tadka Dal 🌿
(Lentil curry)

I love cooking a Pakistani style Dal, it’s something I make regularly. This one is made with red and yellow lentils, a dreamy creamy combo!
Best served with basmati rice, naan, roti or parathas and some spicy pickle on the side (achar), boom💥.
Recipe below, save for later!

Ingredients 🌿
2/3 cup Red lentils
1/3 cup Yellow lentils (moong dal)
1/4 tsp Turmerics
1/2 tsp Red chilli powder, or to taste
1/2 tsp Coriander powder
1/4 tsp Cumin powder
A few Black peppercorns (optional)
Salt, to taste

For the Tadka (tempering) 🌿
1/4 cup oil
1 Medium onion, finely sliced
1-2 Dried red chillies
4-5 Garlic cloves, finely sliced
1 tsp Cumin seeds

For the garnish 🌿
Fresh coriander, finely chopped (to your hearts desire)
Green chillies, finely sliced (optional)
Lemon wedges (optional – but so good!)

Method-
Step 1 – Wash your lentils and soak for 30 minutes, then drain. In a large pot, add the lentils, 4 cups of water, all the dry spices (not the tadka ingredients) and stir. Bring to a boil, then cover with a lid and simmer for 45 -50 minutes. (If any sticking begins, add a little more water)

Step 2 – To prepare the tadka, in a pan, heat the oil, add your onions and garlic. Fry till they become golden brown. During the last 20 seconds, add the cumin seeds and dried red chillies.

Step 4 – Pour the tadka over the dal and top with fresh coriander, green chillies and a squeeze of lemon! 🍋 Enjoy!
